Yogi Josei1 sensei was born in 1934 in Okinawa. At the age of 16, he began practising the Pangainūn (Uechi Ryū) Karate style in the dōjō of the master Uechi Kanei (1911-1991) in Futenma, where he practised for several years. The master Kanei was the son and successor of the master Uechi Kanbun (1977-1948). Master Kanbun had lived in Fujian (China) for thirteen years and learnet a kenpō system called Pangainūn, a fighting style on which the Uechi-ryū style is based.

Due to his work commitments, Yogi sensei was subsequently forced to stop going to the Dōjō of Futenma, although he continued to practise on his own. When his responsibilities allowed, he returned to a dōjō of Uechi-ryū, but this time under the guidance of the master Itokazu Seikō (1933-2023). The master Itakazu was a prominent sensei of Pangainūn (Uechi-Ryū) who, led by his uncle Itakazu Seiki (1915-2006), and together with other masters, founded in 1978 the Pangainūn Karate Kyōkai organization. Subsequently this organization was renamed in 1990 as Okinawa Kōnan-Ryū Karate Kyōkai. Yogi sensei is currently in possession of the 10th Dan Hanshi degree of Kōnan-Ryū Karate for that organisation.

In 2016, Yogi sensei created his own Karate organization called Kōnan Ryū Karate Rensei Kai ©.

Parallel to his training in karate, Yogi sensei also started practicing Okinawa Kobudō with the master Maeshiro Shusei (1934 -). Yogi sensei was linked to the Zen Okinawa Kobudō Renmei organisation chaired by master Matayoshi Shimpo (1921-1997).

In the year 2002 Yogi sensei occupied the position of vice-president in an Okinawa Kobudō organization created by the master Gakiya Yoshiaki (1950 -). In the year 2012, a year after Gakiya sensei retired for health reasons, Yogi sensei created his own association of Kobudō called Okinawa Kobudō Rensei Kai ©. Yogi sensei currently holds the degree of Hanshi 9th Dan in Okinawa Kobudō.

Yogi sensei continues at 89 years old (as of 2023) with the continued teaching of Karate Kōnan Ryū and Okinawa Kobudō.

(1) Translator Note: The name of Master Yogi Josei can also be written as Yogi Jyosei if the Japanese language romanization system called Nihon-Shiki is used.

However, this website uses the system called Hebun-Shiki or standard style for Japanese terms.
